Panama Lady Stories
Today was puppy shopping day and it was a tough day for me. I don’t believe in shopping for puppies because there are so many dogs and puppies out on the street suffering, and dying every day. But Lee believes in appeasing his daughter so it was a day to “find” a puppy.
In David, the other day, I had gone shopping for horse supplies and one of the clerks in the store, asked me if I was interested in a puppy. Knowing that Lee’s daughter only wanted a “puppy”, I asked for more information. The information was sufficient for me to pass on and we ended up returning to David. Supposedly the dog was a Belgian/German Shepherd mixed breed. Hmm. As I expected, the gentleman showed up with a puppy - very small and didn’t quite look like it was a shepherd, but....and then suddenly there was a high price to pay. What happened to negotiating a reasonable price? Ha !
In the end, I think we saved a dog’s life. That is the good news. The bad news is (based on my knowledge and experience) this puppy is not a German Shepherd nor a Belgian Shephard. But too late. Daughter thought this was a Shepherd and wanted the puppy. Well, time will tell.
It was a strange event....we met the gentleman with the puppy, he got in the car and directed us to a vet’s office (we thought he was going to take us to his house where the pup’s father and mother were). Nope..we were directed to a vet who seemed to know exactly where this pup was from and what this pup needed and helped to solidify a “sale”....not an adoption or life saving negotiation.
Daddy wanted daughter to be happy. So he significantly overpaid for this criollo puppy.
I know this puppy will end up being my or Lee’s responsibility in the long run. It was too young to be weaned away from its mother but it will live as we feel we may have saved its life. We hope we can keep it alive and bring it to health.
But my overall unhappiness about the event is that there are very many dogs and cats and other animals out there that need help. I have rescued hundreds of animals (dogs and cats) in the past. This time, it was not my decision and I had no influence. It’s hard for me to accept, as a price should not be paid to help animals. However, exploitation exists everywhere and the sale of an underaged puppy is exploitation.
That’s my opinion....my dog Razz and Spot, our “rent a dog” above are wonderful animals. The only fault is that during the day, my dog Razz is KIDNAPPED by my neighbor! He loves her more than he loves his own purebred dogs! Just goes to show that rescue dogs are much more loveable!

Rescue dogs are so wonderful, why pay for a dog?
